Duration of the award
Four years integrated MRes/PhD or four years PhD if applicant has a suitable Master’s degree approved by Newcastle University.

Project description
The Newcastle University Faculty of Medical Science has adopted research in Childhood Cancer and Leukaemia within the Northern Institute of Cancer Research (NICR) as a priority theme. 

The NICR is a leading international centre of research excellence in paediatric oncology, housing over 80 childhood cancer researchers with expertise in areas including:

  • molecular and cellular mechanisms of cancer development
  • cancer genomics, bioinformatics and molecular classification
  • biomarker development (prognostic & predictive) for therapy stratification
  • drug discovery and development
  • paediatric pharmacology and clinical trials

These research areas form the basis of successful programmes in haematological malignancies (leukaemia and lymphoma) and solid tumours (brain tumours, neuroblastoma, bone sarcomas), aimed at delivering improved outcomes for children with cancer. 

Paediatric oncology research at the NICR is being further supported by the creation of an MRes/PhD studentship supported by the Newcastle University Annual Fund. 

The successful applicant for this studentship will join the NICR and select a project and supervisory team in one of the above areas. 

Value of the award and eligibility
The award covers University fees at the Home/EU rate and a stipend matched to the minimum Research Council recommended stipend (£13,726, 2012/2013).

Person specification
Candidates must have a BSc in an appropriate scientific specialty or subject at either first-class or upper-second-class honours, or a Master’s degree in a relevant subject.
