Graduate Studentships in Single-Molecule Membrane Biophysics

Ref.: ERC13MW

Two positions

Applications are invited for two DPhil studentships under the supervision of Dr Mark Wallace in the Department of Chemistry at Oxford University. The studentships form part of a European Research Council funded project to create complex synthetic mimics of the cell membrane. In these projects we will develop artificial bilayers capable of making precise, controlled changes in mesoscopic membrane phenomena including molecular crowding, membrane curvature, and phase behaviour.

Combined with single-molecule imaging we will then study the responses of a number of important membrane proteins including specific mechanosensitive ion channels, GPCRs, antimicrobial peptides, biopolymers and protein pores.

We will also use these new forms of lipid bilayer for bottom-up synthetic biology to create biosensors and cell mimics capable of undergoing morphological changes and interacting with their environment.

The group is located in the Chemistry Research Laboratory, Mansfield Road, Oxford. You can find out more at http://wallace.chem.ox.ac.uk/ .

Applicants should have, or expect, a first or upper-second class honours degree, or equivalent, in a relevant discipline (e.g. Physics, Biochemistry, Chemistry, Engineering). The studentships will cover the cost of a DPhil course for up to 3.5 years, available from October 2013.
