2018 Australian Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship

Every person on earth depends on agricultural systems to meet their daily needs for food and clothing. By 2050 there will be 2 billion more people on earth. Research into agricultural systems could help ensure that future Australian and global food and fibre needs are met sustainably.

The Australian Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship (ASAS) is an exciting initiative of CSIRO and the Tasmanian Institute of Agriculture (TIA) at the University of Tasmania (UTAS).

CSIRO’s Sustainable Agriculture Flagship and TIA invite candidates to apply for an Elite (top-up) scholarship to tackle this pressing issue through a PhD, with the support and mentoring of CSIRO’s global leaders in agricultural research.

Eligible research under these scholarships will expand multi-disciplinary knowledge of the interactions and trade-offs between the biophysical, social, economic and institutional components of agricultural and food systems, and expand our knowledge of how these interactions contribute to sustainability.

Eligibility for Australian Sustainable Agriculture Scholarship

Applicants should already have, or expect to receive a base scholarship, such as an Australian Postgraduate Award, Australia Award, Endeavour, or alternative. This is a ‘top-up’ scholarship, providing additional support to outstanding students.

Candidates are expected to discuss their application with potential University of Tasmania and CSIRO supervisors before formally applying. This process can be initiated by communicating with the program Contact Officer, who can answer general questions and link the applicant with potential supervisors.
