Summary:

This project is concerned with augmenting the software of existing unmanned surface boats with intelligent pilot agents (IPAs) which need to control the boat to complete a complex mission without human supervision. Natural language programming in sEnglish is used to provide the IPA the sensing, control and reasoning ability to make decisions under various sea-state conditions and with other manned or unmanned boats around and to collaborate with. The IPA ultimately needs the artificial intelligence to complete a mission with various goals and return to the harbour.

The project is supported by an international company and it is a valuable opportunity to gain high level qualifications for the fast growing industrial area of autonomous robotics which is predicted to offer many well paid jobs in the near future across the world.

The successful candidate for this position will hold a good relevant undergraduate (first, upper second or equivalent) or Masters degree (Electronics, Control Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, Physics).

The successful candidate will become part of the Autonomous Systems and Robotics Group at Sheffield and will be based in the new building of the Sheffield Centre for Robotics. Regular visits to the industrial partner makes this project a training of the student to become an industry leader rather than to become an academic. Please address enquires to s.veres@shef.ac.uk .
