The studentship is part of an exciting new collaboration between the University of Gloucestershire and the English Football Association. The research student will be based at the University of Gloucestershire’s Oxstalls Campus, although collaboration with, and travel to, Centres of Excellence/Clubs and St Georges Park will be required. Applications are invited for a one year full time research studentship £7,950 (£4,000pa bursary plus tuition fees of £3950pa) + travel expenses to undertake an MSc by Research at the University of Gloucestershire.

The studentship is available to conduct aspects of the following research:

To explore the muscular and neuromuscular mechanisms associated with injury risk in a large sample of female youth football players. Specifically examining age and maturation related effects.

To explore the relationship between proposed injury risk mechanisms and incidence rates in female youth football players.

The studentship will be primarily supervised by Dr Mark De Ste Croix with Dr Jonathan Hughes as a 2nd supervisor (University of Gloucestershire). Advisors from the FA will be Dr Ian Beasley (Head of Medical Services) Naomi Datson (Head of Sports Science, Women’s), Tracy Lewis (Head of Physiotherapy, Women’s), Michelle Pearson (Head of Strength and Conditioning, Women’s) and Dr Pippa Bennett (Doctor for Women’s Teams). It is anticipated that the position will commence 1st February 2013.

The Faculty would welcome applications from individuals who have the following qualifications, interests or experiences:

  • First or upper second class (or equivalent) degree in a related subject area (e.g. sports science, football and science, physiology, biomechanics);
  • The applicant to have demonstrable interests and some experience in football, particularly women’s football;
  • Experience of working with external partners for data collection purposes.
  • Experience of quantitative data analysis including use of Excel and SPSS.
  • Experience of collecting muscular and neuromuscular data
  • Experience of conducting research with children.
