PhD studentship – Residual stresses in dissimilar metal welded engineering components for nuclear power plant

Faculty of Engineering

SS1221

The project: This research will be aimed at identifying, measuring and modelling the features of the manufacturing process that lead to the presence of residual stress in typical engineering components where the presence of dissimilar metals contribute to the stresses. Idealised models will be compared with results obtained from scaled experiments.

Candidate requirements: A first or upper second-class honours degree in engineering, mathematics, science or related discipline. Due to funding restrictions, this studentship is only open to UK Nationals.

Funding: Tuition fees plus a tax-free stipend of £13,726 per annum, for three years.

How to apply: Please make an online application for this project at the apply button below. Please select Mechanical Engineering (PhD) on the Programme Choice page and enter details of the studentship when prompted in the Funding and Research Details sections of the form.

Contacts: Prof DJ Smith (david.smith@bristol.ac.uk) and Prof CE Truman (c.e.truman@bristol.ac.uk)
