Phd Scholarship on study of Quality of Life enhancement for people with disability



This studentship is based at the University of Exeter Medical School’s European Centre for Environment and Human Health, in Truro and will be jointly supervised by Dr Tim Taylor and Dr Adam Pollard of the European Centre for Environment and Human Health, University of Exeter Medical School, and Professor Gareth Shaw of the University of Exeter Business School.

The PhD focuses on disabled people and seeks to estimate the impact of recreational activity in the natural environment on their quality of life, and to assess the market potential for selected activities in Cornwall.

The PhD will involve a series of inter-related studies that aim to evaluate the potential benefits of recreation €“ including potentially systematic review, semi-structured interviews, the application of Quality of Life questionnaires and/or discrete choice experiments. The protocol for the PhD studies will be developed by the candidate, with the support of the supervisors.

This PhD is funded with support from the European Regional Development Fund. The student would have the potential to be involved in the COST Action TObeWELL (Tourism, Wellbeing and Ecosystem Services).

Entry requirements

This PhD would be very suitable for candidates with background in economics, psychology, management, geography, tourism or related disciplines and will equip the successful applicant in a range of research skills. You should hold a 2:1 (or international equivalent). International students must also have IELTS (International English Language Testing System) score of 7 and above (or equivalent qualification).

Funding notes

The successful applicant will normally be an EU national and have a home address in Cornwall for the duration of their studies. The studentship will provide an annual stipend of £17,290 for three years, with the student responsible for paying their own tuition fees (the Home/EU fee for 2012/13 is £3,850).
