PhD Scholarship Ocean Engineering

PhD applications are invited for a three year scholarship with The Centre for Ocean Engineering, Sciences and Technology (COEST). The successful candidate will conduct research on infragravity (IG) waves in the ocean. This PhD research project is sponsored by Shell Corporation.

This is a challenging oceanographic and important ocean engineering problem that needs to be addressed. The project is proposed as a systematic study of IG waves, including their theory and analysis of available field data. The aim is to develop an IG prediction model within the third generation wave forecast model SWAN.

To be successful in your application you will need to have completed a bachelor’s, honours or master’s degree in an oceanography, engineering or maths field. You will also need to demonstrate the following:

  • Programming knowledge
  • An ability to manage tight deadlines
  • Interpersonal and communication skills
  • Demonstrated use of initiative
  • An ability to conduct independent research projects
  • Knowledge of FORTRAN language (desirable)
