3 year PhD position Silica-based methods for protection and preservation of biological substances

Areas: chemistry, bio-chemistry, materials

Supervisor: Dr. Asel Sartbaeva (http://people.bath.ac.uk/as2413/)

A fully funded 3 year PhD position is open in the group of Dr Asel Sartbaeva in the Department of Chemistry at the University of Bath.

The project will involve developing sol-gel methods for silica precipitation on biological substances (vaccines, enzymes, viruses). Specifically we will look at building silica-based layers on enzymes and vaccines in order to preserve them from denaturation without refrigeration. It is essential that the PhD candidate has good laboratory skills and analytical skills to understand the results. It will be beneficial for the candidate to have good communication skills and enthusiasm for academic research.

The candidate should be a UK/EU citizen and should have at least an upper second-class degree in Chemistry, Bio-Chemistry, Materials or Biology. Due to funding restrictions, other international students may apply to do this research if they have full funding to support their studies. Enquiries should be addressed to Dr. Asel Sartbaeva (a.sartbaeva@bath.ac.uk). If you are in interested, please send a short cover-letter and a CV with names of at least two referees.
