PhD studentships in Planning and Geography



The School of Planning and Geography (CPLAN) is the largest planning school in the UK and takes a wide definition of planning which encompasses the policy areas of economic development, environment, housing, urban design, transport, health as well as land-use planning. The School strives to be a centre of excellence in research, teaching and policy and practice associated with the planning and management of cities and regions.

Studentship Description

The School of Planning and Geography have up to four full time PhD studentships available to start in January 2014.

The studentships are not subject specific and we encourage applications from planners, human geographers and other social and environmental scientists. Preference will be given to applicants whose proposed research connects with the priority research themes of the School’s four research groups.

Applicants are also encouraged to contact any prospective supervisors prior to making an application.

The awards will provide funding for the three years of a PhD, and assumes that the applicant will already have had research training from an MSc degree or extensive research experience. The awards are available for both UK/EU and Overseas applicants.

Start Date: January 2014

Funding

Studentships will cover the full cost of the candidate’s tuition fees and provide a doctoral stipend of £12,000 per year. Students also have access to an annual expenses account to fund Research expenses, such as conference attendance and fieldwork expenses. Students have access to £750 per year in years 1 and 2, and £375 in year 3.

Eligibility

Academic Criteria: Candidates should hold a first Class Honours degree or a 2.1 plus a postgraduate Master’s degree at Distinction level in a relevant social science discipline (or their equivalents).

Residency: Studentships are open to all students of any nationality without restrictions (UK/EU and International).

Evidence of English language is usually required of international students. Arrangements should be made at the nearest British Council office to take an English Language Test (ELTS test), or another appropriate test e.g. TOEFL. We look for the following standard: IELTS minimum overall score of 6.5 with at least a score of 7.0 in the writing section, and no less than a score of 6.0 in other sections.
