Industrial CASE PhD Studentship: Terahertz Intra-Oral Imagers for Dental Care

Anticipated start date for project: Start dates; September 2013

Closing date for applications: 1st September 2013

Information about the project (about 250 words):

The project aims to lay the foundations for the further development and exploitation of a radically new sensing and imaging modality, with its first application in dental care. The targeted methodology is sensing and fast tomography imaging, with no moving parts. It is based on optical fibre delivery, which can ultimately be deployed intra-orally as miniature tomographs employing non-ionising terahertz (T-ray) radiation.

The successful candidate will be trained in a unique set of skills and gain experience in: the application of cutting-edge technology for biomedical imaging; optical and optical-fibre based techniques for image acquisition, processing and interpretation; the modelling, design and prototyping of new intra-oral imaging systems; the assessment of the potential of such systems for wider scientific and industrial applications..

Qualifications applicants should have/expected to receive:

Applicants should be educated to at least BEng (Hons) level with a 2:1 (upper second or equivalent) in natural sciences or engineering, with good understanding of optics and good experimental skills. Good communication skills (oral and written) in English are also required.

Amount of funding available and eligibility:

This is a fully funded Industrial CASE Studentship (fees and stipend), subject to EPSRC requirements for eligibility: http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/Pages/eligibility.aspx. Due to funding restrictions, the full studentship is only available to students from the UK or EU who have been normally resident in the UK for at least 3 years. The Studentship is available for 3.5 years, covering full tuition fees and a stipend with an industrial top-up. The top-up is in addition to the EPSRC minimum Engineering Doctorate stipend (currently £15,226 p.a. tax-free). Candidates are encouraged to check their tax-free status with their local Inland Revenue office.
