Doctoral Fellow “The Transcendental Creation of Community in a Multi-Religious Society: The U.S. from 1945 to 2005



The Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics in Pre-Modern and Modern Cultures” of the Westfälische Wilhelms-Universität Münster is looking to fill the half-time position of a Doctoral Fellow in the project C2–3 “The Transcendental Creation of Community in a Multi-Religious Society: The U.S. from 1945 to 2005” under the direction of Prof. Dr. Heike Bungert. The position begins on 1 October 2013 and is limited to a duration of 3 years with a probation period of 6 months. Regular working hours are currently 19 hours and 55 minutes per week. The annual salary is approximately 20.000 EUR (before taxes) (first year, starting salary). The position will be funded according to the German pay scale 13 TV-L (50%). Archival and conference trips will be financially supported.

The Cluster of Excellence “Religion and Politics” involves the departments of History, Catholic and Protestant Theology as well as Law; the interdisciplinary spectrum is completed by faculty representatives from Islamic Studies, Islamic Theology, Jewish Studies, Egyptology, Philosophy, Philology, Political Science, Sociology, Religious Studies, and Ethnology. Research projects are clustered in fields of normativity, mediality, integrative procedures, and violence. Your responsibilities:
Independent work on a dissertation in the field of civil religion or transcendental creation of community in the postwar United States in the areas of election campaigns, universities, ethnic or religious groups (other case studies are also possible, for further information see http://www.uni-muenster.de/Religion-und-Politik/en/forschung/projekte/c2-3.html), participation in the organization of the research project including conferences and publications as well as assistance in teaching of project-related subjects. This position serves mainly to give the successful applicant the opportunity to write a dissertation.

Your profile:

  • Completion with distinction of Master of Arts preferably in History, but also possibly in American Studies or Religious Studies with a focus on North America
  • Excellent command of English
  • Working knowledge of German
  • Reading knowledge of a third language besides English and German or willingness to acquire same
  • Ability to communicate well within an international research team
  • Team player with superior organizational skills
  • Willingness to be a dedicated participant in the research and administration of the project and to complete a dissertation project successfully within 3 years
  • Substantial knowledge of the United States post-war history and culture
