AHRC Doctoral Studentship (PhD) – History

Programme Closing Date: 7 February 2013

History at Newcastle University encompasses varied research areas including specialisms in British, European, the history of the Americas, and East Asian history. We are part of the Wellcome Trust-funded Northern Centre for the History of Medicine, a partnership between the medical historians at Newcastle and Durham Universities.

We provide our students with excellent research facilities including work stations in the postgraduate suite, first class computing and printing facilities, dedicated teaching space in the Armstrong Building and financial support for conferences and field trips. Through the School of History Classics and Archaeology Postgraduate Forum, our students are able to promote their research and develop their own intellectual networks.

For 2013 entry, we expect to award at least two studentships in History through the AHRC’s Doctoral Awards scheme. This scheme provides studentships to enable students to undertake and complete a doctoral degree (PhD). Home (UK) students and those EU students who have been resident in the UK for a minimum of three years are eligible for a full award comprising fees and an annual, tax free stipend of £13,590 (2012/13 rates). Other EU students are eligible for a fees-only award. To see if you would be eligible for a full or fees only award, please refer to the AHRC’s residency eligibility criteria in Annex A of the AHRC Studentship Funding Guide (PDF: 500KB).

You should be intending to undertake a PhD in History at Newcastle University in September 2013 and meet the AHRC’s student eligibility criteria. Full information on AHRC eligibility criteria can be found in Section 7 and Annex A of the AHRC Studentship Funding Guide (PDF: 500KB). Please note that if you require a Tier 4 visa to study in the UK, you will not be eligible for this funding.
