Open Position for Research Associate (Ph. D. Student)



The research group Crop Biodiversity and Breeding Informatics at the Institute of Plant Breeding, Seed Science and Population Genetics has an open position (65%) of a research associate (Ph. D. student) for three years starting from 1. 8. 2015. The position is part of a collaborative research project aimed at integrating genomic, phenotypic and other data to identify useful plant genetic resources for plant breeding with funding from the German Ministry of Agriculture. The position involves the following tasks: The project will mainy use data generated in a collaborative project to breed soybean varieties for cultivation in Central Europe although our goal is to develop a generic and broadly applicable approach to the identification of potentially useful plant genetic resources for breeding programs and their contribution to food security. Applicants have a Master-level degree in population or quantitative genetics, plant or animal breeding, bioinformatics or statistics, and a strong interest in the analysis of large data sets. The position requires practical experience in a programming or data analysis language (e.g., Python, R) as well as a good background in statistics. The collaborative character of the project requires self-organization as well as the ability to communicate and collaborate with an interdisciplinary team. A strong motivation to learn new methods and tools in order to master scientific challenges in this rapidly evolving area of research are expected.

The position is available from 1. 8. 2015 and is funded for three years according to the E13 TV-L government salary scale (65% part-time).
