Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship 2026
The Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholarship is designed to develop engaged leaders who will make a meaningful impact in their communities and beyond. Through financial support, mentorship, and experiential learning, the scholarship equips doctoral students with the skills, values, and networks needed to become bold and innovative leaders.
Scholarship Value and Benefits
Selected scholars will receive:

Up to $50,000 per year for three years to cover tuition and living expenses.

An additional $20,000 per year to support research, travel, and networking.

Membership in a vibrant community of Scholars, Mentors, and Fellows who are leaders in their respective fields.

Unique leadership training through the Foundation’s Institutes of Engaged Leadership, Retreats, and Impact Conference.

Opportunities to strengthen proficiency in Canada’s official languages (French and English) and to gain familiarity with Indigenous languages.

Lifelong membership in the Foundation’s alumni network.
Expectations of Scholars

Pierre Elliott Trudeau Foundation Scholars are expected to:
-
Participate in Foundation events, including retreats and leadership institutes during their first year.

Collaboratively organize and present the Impact Conference in the second and third years of the program.

Commit to at least 30 hours of volunteer service or community engagement annually, reporting their activities to the Foundation.

Take steps to improve bilingual proficiency in English and French if not already fluent.
-
Engage with Canada’s Indigenous languages as part of their leadership journey.
Eligibility Criteria
To apply, candidates must:

Be enrolled in or accepted into the first or second year of a full-time doctoral program, with completion expected in 2026 or later.

Be pursuing research broadly connected to the humanities or human sciences and relevant to Canada’s future.

Align their doctoral work with at least one of the Foundation’s four themes:

Human Rights and Dignity

Responsible Citizenship
-
Canada and the World
-
People and their Natural Environment
-
Be a Canadian citizen, permanent resident, or foreign national enrolled in a Canadian doctoral program. Foreign nationals studying outside Canada may also be eligible.
Key Dates

September 9, 2025 (9:00 a.m. EST): Application portal opens for the 2026 competition.

September 18, 2025: Awards Officers’ Meeting (Q&A session and formal presentation).
