The Genetic Medicine Research Centre is offering a £1,000 scholarship to the most outstanding applicant to the MRes Genetic Medicine. Applicants will only be considered for this scholarship if they apply and attend their interview before 30th June.
The Masters of Research (MRes) in Genetic Medicine is a pioneering new programme providing extensive practical training in genetics as applied to disease and healthcare. An MRes is a research-based postgraduate qualification with a taught element comparable to a MSc. Offered on a one-year full-time basis this Masters programme differs from most other UK genetics postgraduate courses by allowing students to develop and conduct their own research project over an extended period. The University of Manchester holds worldwide repute within medical genetics and students will have the opportunity to conduct projects under the supervision of international experts in areas such as biochemical genetics, developmental genetics, ocular genetics, health services research in genetics, common disease genetics, and clinical neurogenetics.
Medical genetics is increasingly important in directing clinical care, allowing clinicians and patients to gain insights into the genetic basis of heritable disease and the associated molecular pathological mechanisms. In order to exploit the potential of modern medical genetics, practitioners are now challenged with mastering many areas of genetics (e.g. clinical and molecular). This MRes programme is designed to equip students with the latest knowledge and skills in genetic medicine as applied within genetic healthcare and basic research.
The programme is suitable for science graduates who have a basic understanding of human genetics and molecular biology and graduates will be well qualified for a career in clinical or laboratory based genetic medicine (including biotech and industrial R&D).
For medical students this programme can be completed during undergraduate training or after qualification and will provide invaluable experience for those wishing to pursue a career in genetics or academic medicine.
Graduates from this programme will be well placed for pursuing further research through a PhD.
The taught component of this Masters programme includes research methods, practical laboratory techniques workshops, a tutorial unit, and a lecture series on a range of genetic diseases and health service provision topics. In addition students will have the opportunity to attend seminar series on a range of topics including the weekly genetic medicine seminars. Students will undertake two projects; the first is a literature review which concludes with a research proposal that forms the basis of the second, laboratory based, project that runs over 27 weeks.
Contributors to this Masters programme include eminent clinicians and scientists within the Genetic Medicine Research Group. Students will be based in the Department of Genetic Medicine at St. Maryâs Hospital and will have ample opportunity to network with PhD researchers, post-doctoral staff and clinicians in order to shape their career options.
Applications for entry in September 2013 are now being invited. To be considered for the funding, candidates must first apply for the postgraduate course and the £1,000 scholarship will be awarded to the candidate who submits the strongest application and performs best at interview.
