Applications Now Open: 2026 University of California, Berkeley Visiting Fellowship (Fully Funded by the Mastercard Foundation)
The Mastercard Foundation, in partnership with the Center for African Studies at the University of California, Berkeley, is pleased to invite applications for the 2026 UC Berkeley Visiting Fellowship.
This prestigious, fully funded fellowship offers African scholars the opportunity to engage in independent research in collaboration with UC Berkeley faculty. The program aims to support academic excellence, foster global research partnerships, and enrich scholarly exchange.
About the Fellowship
The Visiting Fellowship is a one-semester (four-month) non-renewable program designed for mid-career scholars. Fellows will have the opportunity to:

Conduct independent research or complete a major publication (article or book)

Build academic ties with UC Berkeley faculty

Mentor Mastercard Foundation Scholars on campus

The fellowship will begin no later than Tuesday, January 20, 2026.
Eligibility Criteria
To be eligible, applicants must:

Be currently residing in an African country
-
Be affiliated with an African institution (university, think tank, or NGO)

Hold a PhD at the time of application
-
Demonstrate a strong potential to contribute significantly to their field

While all disciplines are welcome, preference will be given to research projects related to:

Youth and livelihoods
-
Labor and mobility
-
Displacement and migration
-
Technology and innovation
-
Democracy and future studies
