Fully Funded 2026 Japan Government MEXT Scholarship at the University of Tokyo – Applications Now Open
The University of Tokyo is now accepting applications for the 2026 Government of Japan MEXT Scholarship for international students. This prestigious and fully funded scholarship offers a unique opportunity to pursue graduate-level studies in Japan’s top-ranked university, commonly known as Todai.
About the MEXT Scholarship 2026
The MEXT (Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology) Scholarship covers:
- Full tuition fees
- Annual stipend of ¥1,774,000 (approximately $11,328 USD)
- Additional allowances for students conducting research in designated regions
- Economy-class air travel to and from Japan

University of Tokyo, Japan’s highest-ranked university, offering numerous graduate programs in English.
Application Process – University Recommendation
Under the University Recommendation scheme, Japanese universities are responsible for the initial screening and nomination of candidates to MEXT. Interested applicants must first contact the university or graduate school where they wish to study.
Eligibility Requirements
Applicants must:
- Be international students from countries with diplomatic ties to Japan
- Have an excellent academic record with a minimum GPA of 2.30 out of 3.00
- Meet English language proficiency standards
- Be born on or after April 2, 1990
- Apply for a field of study related to their previous academic background
- Be physically and mentally fit for study in Japan
- Be able to arrive in Japan within two weeks before or after the semester starts
Scholarship Duration
- Master’s Program: October 2025 – September 2027 (2 years)
- Doctoral Program: October 2025 – September 2028 (3 years)
Benefits
Exemption from enrollment and tuition fees
Monthly stipend:
- ¥144,000 for Master’s students
- ¥145,000 for Doctoral students
- Extra ¥2,000–¥3,000 for research in designated areas
Round-trip airfare coverage for recipients
Required Documents
Applicants must prepare and submit the following:
- Completed Application Form
- Field of Study and Research Plan
- Recommendation letter from a university official
- Official academic transcripts (previous and current programs)
- Graduation certificate or expected graduation statement
- Proof of language proficiency
- Passport-sized photo (taken within 6 months)
- Abstract of graduation thesis
- Copy of passport photo page
All documents must be in English or Japanese and printed in A4, double-sided format. Documents in other languages must be accompanied by a Japanese translation.
