This project is an exciting opportunity to undertake a 1 year funded, Masters by Research project - Using chemistry to investigate how to better use waste material and recover valuable materials. It provides the opportunity for a higher degree whilst at the same time delivering a valuable recycling initiative for a major producer.
Qualified as a graduate in chemistry or chemical engineering you will work in a partnership including a major industrial manufacturer which has built their business through an in depth understanding of polymer and inorganic chemistry. The aim is to find value in and use for surplus and waste paint and packaging materials including:
The researcher will have access to the expertise and laboratories at Lancaster University, and via the manufacturer. A tax free stipend of ?13724 is paid (equivalent to a salary of circa ?18,000). A contribution of ?2,000 towards the researcher tuition fees will be made by the project partners. Some travel and access to a car is essential.
The start date is September 2014.
Is provided at Lancaster University Chemistry Department, which is currently undertaking a major expansion with new facilities and equipment. You will also work at and have supervision at a leading industrial manufacturer through a social enterprise working with the company and which is committed to improving recycling. This project will assist a major industrial manufacturer find added value in their waste streams. The aim is to identify, extract, re-use and recycle components of the waste with a view to creating and designing new products which may be returned to the supply chain. The aim is to reduce waste recover valuable materials and make a measurable contribution to environmental and economic performance.
The researcher will spend time up to 50% of their time at the company and with their partners to understand the business opportunities and interest and will also work at the facilities at Lancaster University.
