About the project:
Floods are a serious natural disaster in most countries around the world. More than six million properties are at risk of flooding in the UK alone. A large proportion of this risk is from coastal flooding. It is likely that coastal flood risk will rapidly increase in future as a result of sea level rise and increasing storminess associated with global climate change. The risk is exacerbated by large populations moving into coastal cities, mostly for economic reasons and the development of industrial activities.
Reliable and accurate coastal erosion and flood forecasting is an essential component of sustainable coastal management. This project will build on the supervisorâs on-going work in a large UK Engineering and Physical Science Research Council funded project on coastal flood modelling. A state-of-the-art coastal area model (XBeach) will be modified and used to investigate the impacts of different climate change scenarios on coastal erosion and flooding. The project will use global wave predictions by the Disaster Prevention Research Institute of Kyoto University Japan and other relevant inputs from global weather and tide models.
The selected candidate will have the opportunity to work among researchers of the very dynamic and rapidly expanding âEngineering from Clouds to Coast Research Groupâ at Swansea University's College of Engineering. The group is involved in a wide range of coastal engineering and hydro-meteorological modelling research and maintain links with various national and international research organisations in coastal engineering and climate change research.
Candidate Eligibility: Applicants should hold or be completing an undergraduate honours degree with a 2.1 or above.
Degrees in all areas of engineering, physics, mathematics, physical oceanography and other related subjects will be considered
UK students: UK students are eligible for a full award (stipend and fees).
EU students: EU students who have been âordinarily residentâ in the UK for 3 years prior to the start of the grant are eligible for the full award (stipend and fees). Due to funding restrictions the EPSRC requires that they must have been normally residing in the UK (apart from temporary or occasional absences). EU students who are ordinarily resident in a member state of the EU are generally eligible for a fees-only award.
Further information about eligibility requirements can be found on the EPSRC website:Â http://www.epsrc.ac.uk/skills/students/help/Pages/eligibility.aspx
Studentship Value: The full studentship covers tuition fees and a tax-free stipend of £13,726 p.a.
Further Information: Applicants are encouraged to email the supervisor, Dr. Harshinie Karunarathna in the first instance: H.U.Karunarathna@swansea.ac.uk
Application Closing Date: The deadline for applications is Friday 15th November 2013.
