Wing Shock-Shadowography MSc by research

Project: The feasibility of the proposed methodology to extract useful information is initiated by a study to clarify the precise mechanism of the shadow formation. A ray tracing algorithm will be developed allowing a parametric study in terms of shock curvature, strength, wall distance, etc. with respect to shadow formation on a straight wall. Such a study will allow assessment of existing recordings of wing-shock shadows in terms of data content. In parallel, existing recordings of wing-shock shadowgraphs will be analysed by means of specially developed image processing techniques to infer time-dependent data regarding shock position during flight tests. The latter will aid preliminary understanding of the dynamics of shock movement in real conditions.

Candidate requirements: Candidates should have obtained a degree in Aerospace Engineering with experience in image analysis.
