Studentship – PhD Future Recycleable – Lightweight Vehicle Body Structure Design Optimisation

Maintenance grant: £13726 maintenance per annum (tax free).

Details of proposed research: This is an EPSRC funded consortium project TARF-LCV (Towards Affordable, Closed-Loop Recyclable Future Low Carbon Vehicle Structures – TARF-LCV). A major activity will involve investigating the use of a range of metallic and composite materials for the design of lightweight low carbon vehicle body structures.

The work will involve the areas of:-

a) Computer Aided Design – candidates would ideally come with expertise in Computer Aided Design (structure and surface) and the development of automotive components and systems

b) Computer Aided (Finite Element) Analysis – candidates would ideally come with expertise in non-linear FE Based modelling, including explicit analysis.  

c) Knowledge of Structural Optimisation Techniques – candidates are expected  to have experience/knowledge of topology optimisation, Design of Experiments (DOE), statistical analysis and High Performance Computing (HPC) utilisation and software coupling.

Expected Qualifications

An Automotive or Mechanical Engineering MSc (Merit) is preferred, however a minimum BEng (2.1) will be considered along with Manufacturing or Aerospace Engineering.
