Research Associate – Developing a cellular model of Motor Neuron Disease

(Fixed Term)

Applications are invited for a Post-Doctoral Research Associate in the Centre for Misfolding Diseases who will investigate the translocation and trafficking of TDP-43, a protein related to Motor Neuron Disease, within a mammalian cell model system. The project involves using fluorescence microscopy techniques to monitor the real-time translocation of TDP-43 from the nucleus to the cytoplasm with the aim of understanding the molecular mechanisms of this process and how they may relate to the manifestation of disease.

The successful candidate will use real-time imaging techniques and they will also perform co-localisation studies to understand the trafficking of the protein of interest, as well as use biochemical analysis (western blotting, ELISAs, staining/imaging) of sample lysates. To complement the cellular work, the project may also involve looking at TDP-43 aggregation using in vitro biophysical techniques.

Applicants will have a Ph.D. in relevant discipline. Extensive experience with tissue culturing techniques is essential and experience creating transfected cell lines is desirable. They will have experience with confocal microscopy imaging, in particular with IHC staining techniques and also with real-time imaging. The candidate will have excellent communication skills and the ability to work effectively as part of a multi-disciplinary team.
