Research Assistant in Systems Biology

We are seeking to appoint a Research Assistant to work in Dr Omer Dushek’s laboratory. The laboratory is focused on signal transduction by immune receptors. A common feature of these receptors is that upon ligand binding, cytoplasmic tyrosine kinases and phosphatase bind (or tether) to their cytoplasmic tails. When these enzymes are tethered on receptor tail near the membrane, they catalyse reactions on substrates that they can reach. We recently developed a biophysical assay that can completely characterise tethered enzymatic reaction. The primary focus of this position will be to exploit this new assay to study a variety of tethered signalling reactions.

The primary responsibility of the post holder will be to carry out research. The research will involve expression and purification of signalling enzymes (tyrosine kinases and phosphatases) and their subsequent characterisation using a new assay we have developed. The assay relies on the biophysical technique of surface plasmon resonance (SPR). The post holder will also be expected to take on responsibilities related to the general management of the laboratory. It is also expected that the post holder will participate in journal clubs, laboratory meetings, and technical progress meetings.

You should have a first degree in biochemistry or a related field and you should be proficient in general molecular biology techniques, protein expression and purification methods and have experience in methods for protein=protein interactons (e.g SPR) and in data analysis.
