PhD studentship funding is available as part of a major University of Nottingham / EPSRC funded project.
The aim of the research project is to develop ultrasonics operating at the nanoscale. Applications are invited for PhDs students to join our internationally leading research group.
At very high frequencies, the wavelength of sound waves can become smaller than the wavelength of light. This opens up a myriad of new opportunities for measuring, imaging and interacting with the nanoscale environment; especially for biological applications.
Students should have a 1st class or 2:1 undergraduate degree, or a Masters degree in a related area: physics, engineering, chemistry, biology or nanoscience.
The main theme of the research project encompasses many different fields, including:
- Ultrasonics, PS-ultrasonics
- Optics, plasmonics
- Numerical and analytical analysis of EM and elastic waves
- Hard and soft nanofabrication
- Nanoscale imaging through EM, SPM and/or AFM
- Working with cells and tissue cultures
- High and low level computer programming and electronics
There is scope for a number of different project areas within the research program which can be adapted depending on the strengths of the candidate. Students should be able to demonstrate a creative approach to problem solving, possess excellent communication skills, be enthusiastic and highly motivated, and keen to work as part of an established multidisciplinary team. An example of some of the work we are doing in this area can be found at:

The studentship will cover PhD tuition fees and a tax-free stipend for three years (£13,726 for the 2013-14 academic year) for UK/EU students. There is a possibility of converting the studentship to fees only for international students.
Students will be expected to start in early 2014.
Informal enquiries should be addressed to Prof Matt Clark, email: matt@nottingham.ac.ukÂ
Formal applications should be submitted by email by clicking on the ‘Apply’ button below. Please include a CV, a brief statement of your research interests, and with names and email addresses of two referees, addressed (referencing these studentships) to Laura Sun, Postgraduate Administrator, Faculty of Engineering.
