PhD Scholarships for September 2013 entry

Kent Business School invites applications from excellent students for PhD scholarships with a September 2013 entry. Candidates may apply for either four-year 1+3 or three-year PhD scholarships, depending on their entry qualifications.

The Scholarships
University of Kent PhD scholarships take the form of Graduate Teaching Assistantships (GTAs) whereby PhD students receive financial support in return for some part-time teaching. A full GTA covers tuition fees at the home/EU rate plus a combined salary and maintenance grant of up to the full UK Research Council rate (£13,590 per annum in the 2012-13 academic year). Full terms and conditions are available here.

Kent Business School’s 1+3 scholarships also covers tuition fees at the home/EU rate plus a maintenance grant of up to the full UK Research Council rate of £13,590 (2012-13 rate) during their Masters by Research programme.  Students then progress to the PhD scholarship (GTA) programme, on condition that they pass the Masters by Research to a satisfactory standard.

Eligibility criteria
All these schemes are highly competitive and will be awarded to the best qualified applicants who show the greatest potential for a successful research career and as teachers. Consequently, successful applicants will normally meet all of the following criteria unless both the research proposal and references are exceptional:

  • Distinction at Master’s level (for three year PhD scholarships) in a relevant subject.
  • A first at undergraduate level in a relevant subject for students still completing their Master’s or applying for the 1+3 option.
  • Score of 7.0 in IELT test. As all PhD scholarship students carry out teaching duties there will be no exceptions to this.

Shortlisted candidates will be invites to attend an interview in early May.
