PhD Scholarship in Psychology

The doctoral programme amounts to 240 credits, the equivalent of four years of full time studies. The programme formally ends with the doctoral candidate publicly defending her/his published doctoral thesis. The primary obligation of the holder of a limited tenure doctoral position is to successfully fulfill her/his third cycle education ending with an approved Ph.D. thesis.  

Regulations for limited tenure employment as a doctoral student are found in Higher Education Ordinance (chapter 5, 1-7§§). Only those persons who have been formally accepted to doctoral studies by the department can be eligible for limited tenure employment as a doctoral student.

In addition to their own doctoral studies doctoral students can be required to perform departmental duties such as teaching, research and administrative work in accordance with the terms of the regulation, amounting to 20 percent of full time.

Eligibility
Students with basic eligibility for third-cycle studies are those who- have completed a second-cycle degree- have completed courses of at least 240 credits, of which at least 60 credits are from second-cycle courses, or- have acquired largely equivalent knowledge in some other way, in Sweden or abroad.

Specific requirements for admission into a doctoral programme in psychology include satisfactory completion of at least 30 credits from advanced-level courses in psychology. At least 15 credits must be from an advanced level thesis, such as a masters thesis

Evaluation criteria

A.) The regulations concerning limited tenure doctoral positions can be found in SFS 1998:80. Only those accepted to a doctoral programme can hold a limited tenure doctoral position. The selection of candidates are primarily concerned with the research potential of the applicants. All eligible applicants are evaluated on the following criteria;

1.) The scientific quality of earlier relevant papers, such as masters theses, scientific publications, and other research experience.

2.) The scientific quality and feasibility of the research plan. Previous preparation and relevant work experience can also be considered.

A Documentation of previous education and scientific work

The documentation should be submitted under the following headings: transcripts of educational records, certificates of academic degrees, employment at present and scientific reports should be submitted under the headings:

  • Peer-reviewed articles/book chapters published internationally
  • Manuscript/book chapters submitted to peer-reviewed journals or books (specify the journal or book involved)
  • Other published articles
  • Unpublished manuscripts
  • Thesis.

Reports of a non-scientific character should not be listed. Each of the documents submitted should be authenticated.

B Preliminary plan for the doctoral work

The plan for the doctoral work should be presented under the following headings:

  • Area of scientific interest in a broad sense
  • Title
  • Background
  • Aim
  • Design and methods for collecting and analyzing the data
  • Sample studied (number of participants and selection and recruitment of them)
  • References (in accordance with the APA manual, latest edition)

The plan should be minimum 3 and maximum 4 pages in length, excluding references (with type-size 12 pt and with single space).

C Time schedule

The time schedule for the doctoral work (a total of 4 years for full-time studies and 8 years for part-time studies) should include an approximate plan on a term-by-term basis.

D Financial plan

The financial plan should cover a period of 4 years for full-time studies and 8 years for halftime studies.

  • External financial plan (if applicable)
  • funds from a research grant or from governmental or community sources
  • financing by an employer
  • a scholarship

The financial plan must be accompanied by documentation indicating the financial amount available.
