PhD Scholarship in Ecosystem based Marine Management



A PhD Scholarship in Ecosystem based Marine Management is available at the National Institute of Aquatic Resources (DTU Aqua) with starting date in 2013.

The project will primarily be carried out in affiliation to the Section for Ecosystem based Marine Management at the Fisheries Technology research group which is situated North Sea Research Centre, in Hirtshals, Denmark.

DTU Aqua is an institute at the Technical University of Denmark. The purpose of DTU Aqua is to provide research, advice and education at the highest international level within the sustainable exploitation of living marine and freshwater resources, the biology of aquatic organisms and the development of ecosystems as well as their integration in ecosystem-based management. The institute has an international research staff comprising approx. 120 academic employees.

Project description
The project will conduct research in relation to assessing impacts of fishing gears, particularly trawls, with the overall aim of reducing unwanted by-catches and discards as well as to reduce the impact on the marine environment. The candidate will join an active, international and cross-disciplinary research team. The specific contents of the project will be formulated in cooperation with the successful candidate reflecting qualifications, under the frames defined by externally funded projects.

Qualifications
We are looking for a candidate who has:

  • Master of Science (M.Sc.) degree, or equivalent
  • Any relevant experience
  • Keen interest in research and experimental work
  • Good co-operation abilities
  • Proficiency in written and spoken English

Approval and Enrolment
The scholarship for the PhD degree is subject to academic approval, and the candidate will be enrolled in one of the general degree programs at DTU. For information about the general requirements for enrolment and the general planning of the scholarship studies, please see the DTU PhD Guide.

The assessment of applicants will be made by Niels Madsen.

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD students at DTU. The employment period is 3 years.
