PhD Position in Big Data



The group of Information Systems & Databases (Informatik 5, Prof. Jarke) at RWTH Aachen University in Germany is an internationally renowned research group with several projects in the area of database systems, software engineering, information systems, mobile systems, and technology-enhanced learning.

In the area of Big Data and Scientific Data Management, the group cooperates closely with the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Information Technology FIT in St. Augustin (Germany) and develops innovative systems for data management, data integration, and data analysis, which are used in industry & research.

To support our inter-disciplinary teams in the area of Big Data, data integration, and mobile data management, we are looking for a research assistant (PhD student) who wants to contribute to current research projects and innovative solutions in the following areas:

  • Database systems (Relational and NoSQL)
  • Distributed data management (Hadoop, MapReduce)
  • Data analysis (Big Data Analytics, Data Science, Visual Analytics)
  • Data modelling and data integration

Requirements

An excellent master degree in computer science or a related area and good knowledge in the above mentioned areas. Furthermore, knowledge about software and system engineering is also required. In addition, you should be highly motivated and a team player, but you should be also able to work independently and take responsibility.

You will have the possibility to complete your PhD in this area.

About the Position

You will be employed by the university. The employment can be done in full-time or part-time. The position is limited to two years, but it can be extended. Salary is according to the German TV-L (E13, net salary roughly 2000 EUR/month).
