About The Nellie Martin Carman Scholarship Fund

The Nellie Martin Carman Scholarship Fund was founded in 1949 and is available to graduating high school seniors from public high schools in King, Pierce, and Snohomish counties in the Washington State. This non-profit organization aims to help students achieve their educational goals by providing financial assistance to help pay for their post-secondary education.

To Be eligibile for this scholarship, the student must meet the following criteria:

  • Be a graduating senior from a public high school in the county of King, Pierce or Snohomish in the state of Washington in the year of appointment
  •  Be a United States citizen
  •  Plan to attend a college in the state of Washington on a full-time basis

Application forms are only available through the high schools in the counties mentioned above and candidates for the scholarship are nominated by their school each year. These high schools receive the application forms and guidelines each year by January 10 and have a deadline of March 1st to mail in their candidates’ completed applications.

Music, sculpture, drawing, interior decorating or domestic science are not accepted as major subject courses. (Regulations of this Trust were set up by Mrs. Carman in 1949.)

Maximum amount of award is $2,000, renewable for four years of college in the State of Washington. Approximately 30 awards are made each year depending on funds available for new awards and renewal awards.

The Nellie Martin Carman Scholarship Committee will choose its recipients based on the following criteria:

• Financial need
• Academic performance
• College test scores (SAT/ACT test scores)
• School and community activities

Scholarship Renewal:

Award recipients may renew their scholarship for up to four (4) years provided that:

• They are able to maintain a cumulative GPA of 3.0 or its equivalent
• Maintain a high standard of conduct and still require financial aid
• Merit a renewal of his/her scholarship (in the option of the Committee)
Note: Renewal of the scholarship award may be done online via www.carmanscholarships.org.

Award Disbursement:

Each summer, a banquet is held for the Carman Scholars. The scholarships will be awarded at the banquet. The banquet gives the scholars who are attending various schools an opportunity to get to know each other and the members of the Committee.
