MA by Research studentship in Religious History

The Department of History, Philosophy and Religion is pleased to offer a part-time MA by Research studentship in Religious History starting in September 2016 or January 2017.

The studentship is funded by Westminster College Oxford Trust and applications are invited for an MA by Research Studentship (part-time) in a field of religious history in the seventeenth, eighteenth or nineteenth centuries to be supervised by Professor William Gibson and/or Dr Peter Forsaith in the Oxford Centre for Methodism and Church History. There are no restrictions on the topics or area for research, so the University is looking for applicants to propose a topic or area of study.

Professor Gibson and Dr Forsaith can offer research supervision in the following fields: religion in Britain 1660-1900, church and state in the eighteenth century, religion and art in the eighteenth century, history and historical theology of Methodism and evangelicalism 1700-1900, history of post-reformation Wales, book history and biographical study in the period 1600-1900.

The successful candidate will receive a studentship which will cover the costs of the University’s part time Home/EU research degree fees, currently £2,112, for two years.

As a successful applicant, you will be supported by an inter-disciplinary team and will join a supportive and research-active department; for more information on the Department of History, Philosophy & Religion visit http://history.brookes.ac.uk/.

Eligibility: Applications are invited from Home/EU students only. We are looking to recruit candidates who have a clear field of interest. Applicants should have a good honours degree (upper second or first class) in a relevant field, e.g. history or theology. The studentship holder may also be required to complete supplementary research methods training in their first year of study. Applicants should also be able to demonstrate strong research capabilities and be fluent in spoken and written English.
