SUMMARY OF GENERAL PROCEDURES AND DETAILS OF HOW TO APPLY

The Department of History, Philosophy and Religion, Oxford Brookes University is looking for strong candidates to apply for MAs by research. The successful applicants will become members of the Oxford research cluster group on intellectual humility involving philosophers and theologians from Oxford Brookes and Oxford Universities. In the first semester of 2014-15 this group will run a series of 6 workshops and in the second semester an international conference. This is part of the St. Louis University project on The Philosophy and Theology of Intellectual Humility (http://humility.slu.edu/clustergroups.html).

Successful applicants will receive a book grant of ?300 and there will also be the opportunity to apply for paid research assistantships and to be involved in the organization of the cluster group and conference.

The programme runs for a maximum of one year for full-time and two years part-time study. The Home/EU fees for the academic year 2014/2015 are ?3,966 (full-time) and ?2,022 (part-time) and the full-time International fee is ?12,700. We would be particularly interested in research proposals focusing on issues concerning intellectual humility in the context of virtue theory, the history of philosophy and/or the philosophy of religion.

Oxford Brookes Philosophy is a small, thriving unit and it is the hub of, along with the cluster group, the Oxford Brookes human nature and behaviour research groups, the Oxford Hume Forum and an annual International Hume Workshop. As a successful applicant, you will join a supportive and research-active Department. In the RAE 2008, 90% of the research in the Department was judged to be of International quality and 65% of this world-leading. Eligibility: We are looking to recruit candidates of the highest quality and who are capable of submitting an MA thesis within one year. Applicants should normally hold a first or upper second class honours degree and should also be able to demonstrate strong research capabilities and be fluent in spoken and written English.
