Subject study: Developing a person-centred approach to increase participation in sport, physical activity and exercise to improve health in hard to reach groups in Wales

Brief Summary of project:

The project is being conducted in collaboration with Sport Wales.

The project’s main aim is to develop a person-centred intervention to increase physical activity, sport and exercise, and, improve health across Wales to address the Well-being of Future Generations Act’s well-being goals. The intervention will be designed to optimise motivation, confidence, awareness and positive experience in line with the specific needs identified for different sub-groups. We anticipate that three studies will be undertaken, first, identifying profiles of barriers to participation within different subgroups of the population (e.g., BME, older adults, middle aged females). Next, based on the population sub-group with the lowest overall participation level, qualitative research will explore these barriers in more detail to develop an intervention to reduce barriers and increase physical activity. Finally, the research will involve a feasibility pilot of this intervention with a sample of participants from the target population sub-group.
