Fully Funded Studentship Novel hydrogel based drug delivery systems: understanding structure and transport properties using NMR

Deadline:

31st July 2013. This studentship is available for a 1st October 2013 start.

Supervisory Team:

Primary: Professor Yaroslav Khimyak

The Project:

Hydrogels are finding numerous applications in drug-delivery systems. Despites significant interest in such materials, very little is known about the fine details of their structure and they fall into the domain between traditional solids and liquids. This limits the application of numerous structural tools (including XRD). The aim of this project is to gain molecular level understanding of various hydrogel systems using advanced modern nuclear magnetic resonance methods (including HR/MAS methods designed specifically for soft materials recently installed in UEA). These finely detailed structural models, if obtained, would provide incredibly important scientific knowledge allowing for further tuning of the properties of the materials, the design of the compounds that form these materials and the application of these materials in solving real life societal difficulties.

Entry Requirements:

A first or upper second class UK honours degree or the equivalent qualifications gained outside the UK, in Chemistry, Pharmacy, Materials Science, Physics or Biological Sciences.

Funding:

Tuition fees will be covered at the UK/EU rate, and a stipend will be awarded at the standard RCUK rate.

Making Your Application:

Please apply via the University’s online application system. To discuss the application process or particular projects, please contact the: Admissions Office, email: pgr.enquiries.admiss@uea.ac.uk or telephone +44 (0)1603 591709.
