3 year EPSRC funded PhD studentship Nanocarbon reinforced composite materials

Applications are invited for a Ph.D. studentship in the Department of Aeronautics funded by the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council in the field of synthesis and characterization of composite materials reinforced by nanocarbon such as carbon nanotubes and graphene.

Nanoparticle reinforced lightweight materials with improved physical properties have attracted great attention due to their potential for saving energy by reducing the weight of vehicles and aircraft. This PhD project will focus on developing new methods to produce nanocarbon reinforced composite materials and on characterising their properties. The candidate will develop methods to distribute nanocarbon particles homogenously in different matrix materials, and will measure physical properties including mechanical and electrical properties of the resulting composite structures.  The microstructure of the composites will also be studied. Additionally, the reinforcing mechanisms acting in nanoparticle composites will be investigated by relating the experimental investigation to modelling approaches.

Students with a First or high Upper Second Class Degree (in Material Science and Engineering/ Chemistry / Chemical Engineering) are invited to apply. Candidates should have a strong background in materials science and engineering, knowledge in chemistry and engineering design. Experience with dispersion of nanoparticles is preferred. Demonstrated ability of autonomous experimental research and contribution to scientific publications is a plus.

Due to funding restrictions for the scheme, UK citizens are eligible, as are EU citizens who have been resident in the UK for the 3 years preceding the date of application. Other EU citizens are eligible for a fees-only award. Non-EU students are ineligible, unless they have been ordinarily resident in the UK for 3 years preceding the date of application for purposes other than education.
