Masters by Research ? Using light to help control infections


An exciting opportunity for a graduate in microbiology, medical science or human biology to undertake a funded 1 year Masters by Research degree. Working in the Faculty of Health and Medicine at Lancaster University and with one of the nation?s most innovative lighting manufacturers, the researcher will undertake research into the effects of light upon the viability of micro-organisms. The aim is to develop new and effective solutions to disease prevention through light-induced bactericidal processes which may also alleviate the problems of increasing antibiotic resistance in certain microorganisms. The applicant must have a first or upper second degree in a relevant science and an interest in physics and human health. The start date is September 2014.

Based in South Cumbria the graduate researcher will have access to their development team and facilities as well as those at the university and it is anticipated that the researcher will initially spend time at the company to understand the business opportunities and interest.

This project is part of the Centre for Global Eco-Innovation which brings together the expertise, resources and global contacts of Lancaster University and the University of Liverpool, together with international commercialisation consultancy Inventya Ltd. The aim of the centre is to form collaborative R&D partnerships to enable and drive innovation in businesses, supporting the development of new products, processes and services for the global marketplace that have positive environmental benefits.


By joining the centre you will receive a stipend payment of ?13,726 for the year and a contribution of ?2,000 will be paid towards your Masters tuition fees by your partner business. The appointed candidate will finish in a strong position to enter a competitive job market in the UK and overseas. The Centre for Global Eco-innovation is the only centre of its kind in Europe and is part financed by the European Regional Development Fund.
