PhD research into ‘Supply chain collaborative BIM system for minimising construction waste in design’

£13,590 stipend per annum

Applications are invited for 2 full-time PhD Research Scholarships in this multidisciplinary area of Computer Science and Construction. One is in the area of Software Engineering and computer science, with the second in the area of Construction (Building, Civil Engineering or Architecture), with knowledge of Software Engineering.

You will be part of a research team undertaking a Technology Strategy Board (TSB) funded project that aims to minimise construction waste at design stage using Building Information Modelling (BIM).

Working under the supervision of Professor Lukumon Oyedele, the overall aim of the two studentships is to develop a BIM software tool that would enable designers (architects, structural engineers, etc.) and contractors to simulate, predict and identify sources of construction waste at an early design phase of a building project.

The scholarship is available from 1 October 2013 and consists of an annual stipend of £13,590, subject to satisfactory progress, for three years. In addition, full-time tuition fees will be covered for three years (Home/EU rates only). Overseas applicants will be required to cover the difference between the Home/EU and the overseas tuition fee rates (approximately £7,565 per annum).

  • The first PhD scholarship is open to graduates of computer science and software engineering background. Applicants should have a minimum of 2.2 honours degree in Computer Science with an MSc in Software Engineering. An experience of working in both software industry and knowledge of construction/building operations would be an added advantage.
  • The second PhD studentship is for graduates of Construction with deep understanding and knowledge of Software Engineering. Applicants for this second scholarship should have a minimum of 2.2 honours degree in Building, Civil Engineering, Architecture or Quantity Surveying with an MSc. An MSc in Computer Science or Software Engineering would be an added advantage for the award of this scholarship.
